Alberta and Canada: Stronger Together
While there are legitimate public policy concerns being raised in Alberta around competitiveness, project approvals, and economic opportunity, Canada’s democratic system is strong enough to address those concerns constructively while continuing to build a stronger, more competitive national economy, together.
The Council
As we approach October’s referendum, it’s important to remember that Alberta is a valued and essential part of Canada’s future. And all parts of Canada are an essential part of theirs.
We know Canada is not perfect. It takes constant work to address disagreements and to meet our potential. The functioning of our federation for small, medium and large businesses alike is vital.
But with regional tensions, business uncertainty follows. Even having such divisive internal debates has its economic cost.
Canada has a confidence challenge and external threats to tackle – and the answer is not dividing. It’s renewing our bonds.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce and its members on the Alberta and Canada: Stronger Together are committed to contributing to the national discussion constructively and positively. We recognize there are real public policy challenges for regions, which are best dealt with through our world-class democracy. We are committed to engaging with the federal government, provinces and communities to shape this discussion into one focused on cementing our shared future, rather than one about leverage or disunity. We believe in a better life for all in Canada and Alberta.
Business does not have time or patience for constitutional debates right now. In this spirit, let us settle this question once and for all. We know Canada without Alberta is no Canada at all.
The Council will be made up of a diverse group of organizations of all sizes across Canada that have operations or interests in provinces affected by questions of unity and regional identity. Interested organizations looking to join should reach out because this discussion is heating up quickly, and settling it is in all of our interest.
