The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has concluded its first international trade mission of 2026 — a focused, forward-looking delegation to Mexico City centred on the future of CUSMA and the Canada–Mexico economic relationship.

Led alongside the Government of Canada’s official Team Canada Trade Mission, hosted by Minister Dominic LeBlanc, the Chamber brought together more than 30 Canadian business and chamber leaders representing sectors including energy, mining, agri-food, transportation, technology, financial services and consulting. Together, hundreds of Canadian leaders gathered in Mexico with a shared objective: strengthening North American trade at a pivotal moment.

As we look ahead to the 2026 CUSMA Review, one fact stands out. Mexico is Canada’s third-largest trading partner, yet it accounts for just 1.1% of our exports. After more than 30 years of continental free trade — first under NAFTA and now CUSMA — there remains significant untapped potential between our two countries.

Over three days, our delegation engaged directly with Mexican government officials, industry leaders and business counterparts. Highlights included a business roundtable hosted by Holland & Knight LLP, discussions with the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial (CCE), a visit to the Mexican Senate, and the Mexico–Canada Business Forum hosted at Scotiabank’s headquarters.

Our President & CEO, Candace Laing, had the honour of speaking before the Mexican Senate, reinforcing the strength and seriousness of Canada’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties.

This mission was made possible thanks to the support of our partners and sponsors — Scotiabank, Air Canada and Export Development Canada (EDC) — and through close collaboration with CanCham Mexico, ICC Mexico, COMCE, CCE and Holland & Knight Mexico.

One message resonated throughout the week: Canada and Mexico have more to achieve together. Strengthening this partnership is about enhancing North America’s competitiveness and resilience. As global trade continues to evolve, closer cooperation will help build a more diversified and secure economic future.

The work continues — and so does our commitment to ensuring business voices help shape what comes next in North American trade.
