The Canadian Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Government of Canada’s decision to direct the CRTC to revisit its far-reaching May 21 decision. Our members expressed significant concern that the decision would introduce considerable risk to the Canadian economy and create a compliance regime so complex that even the largest organizations would struggle to navigate it effectively, without any meaningful relief for Canadian industry. The timing was also deeply problematic, creating unnecessary uncertainty at a critical moment for Canada’s trade and economic interests and risking disruption to ongoing trade negotiations.

Canada’s arts and cultural sectors are essential contributors to our national economy. From major film productions to local theatre companies, these industries support thousands of jobs, attract investment, and enrich communities across the country. Their economic and cultural contributions cannot be understated or taken for granted. Continued government support for the sector is critical, and this week’s announcement of sustainable, predictable funding is welcome news for Canada’s business community and the cultural industries alike.

The Canadian Chamber is equally concerned that this decision suggests some federal regulators have yet to embrace the government’s broader commitment to reducing red tape and regulatory complexity. Businesses, from Bay Street to Stratford, need relief from unnecessary regulatory burden, not additional layers of compliance and uncertainty. We encourage the CRTC to leave this decision on the cutting room floor and use this opportunity to pursue a more practical and balanced approach. It is time for all federal regulators to align with the government’s competitiveness agenda and focus on reducing barriers to growth so Canadian industries can compete and succeed on the global stage.
