Today’s announcement of the draft emissions cap regulations threaten to make Canada’s climate policies more fragmented and less competitive, leading to a costly and disjointed approach to emissions reduction. Such restrictions on oil and gas production could hinder energy trade, jeopardizing our shared economic and security interests.

This proposed cap is unnecessary and lacks meaningful support from both political and industry stakeholders. Without a solid foundation of backing and buy-in, it could create uncertainty in the energy market, discourage investment, and undermine the stability that businesses and consumers depend on.

As Canada’s economy stagnates and concerns over productivity, energy security, and affordability rise, enforcing an emissions cap on the oil and gas sector would only exacerbate the financial burden on Canadians. Effective climate action requires a strong economy—something this cap fundamentally undermines.
