Peter J Cullen, FCIArb is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (arbitrating member of the CIArb Canada Branch) and an arbitrating member of the ICC Canada Arbitration Committee. He is a former Director (and former Chair of the Rules Committee) of AMAC (Association of Maritime Arbitrators of Canada), a supporting member of the VMAA (Vancouver Maritime Arbitrators Association) and a former member of the SIAC’s (Singapore International Arbitration Centre’s) Users’ Council. He is an Honorary Life Member of the CMLA (Canadian Maritime Law Association, President 2003-2004) and a Titulary Member of the CMI (Comité Maritime International – member of the Audit Committee and of the International Working Group on Polar Shipping). He is a member of the International Bar Association’s arbitration, insurance and transport committees (former North America Regional Officer) and was a member of council of the Canadian Bar Association (former Chair of the National Sections Council and Chair of the National Maritime Law Section).
Mr. Cullen has acted as a sole ICC arbitrator and as a sole arbitrator and panel member in ad hoc, AMAC and UNCITRAL Model Law arbitrations, in addition to acting as counsel in international arbitrations (ad hoc, AMAC, LMAA, SIAC, SMA and UNCITRAL Model Law), domestic arbitrations and mediations. These disputes have primarily involved shipping, insurance, licensing and distribution agreements, sale of goods, carriage of goods, ship construction/repair and design, chartering and related contract issues.
He was a long-standing litigation Partner and Senior Counsel (and Risk Manager) with Stikeman Elliott LLP (1988-2023), one of Canada’s leading national commercial law firms, before joining the boutique shipping firm of Brisset Bishop SENC. He is listed in Chambers Canada 2023 as a Senior Statesman in Transportation: Shipping and in the 2022 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada in Alternative Dispute Resolution, Insurance, International Arbitration and Maritime Law and is named as a leading lawyer by such publications as The Canadian Legal Lepert Directory 2022 in Shipping and Maritime and the legal 500 Canada 2022 in Transport: Shipping.
He holds degrees in civil and common law and is a member of the Barreau du Québec and the Law Society of Ontario (and practices in the English and French languages). He also holds Canadian and Irish (EU) citizenships.
