The Supply Chains that Keep Canada’s Resource Sector Moving

Canada is a resource nation. Our history, our present, and our future are closely entwined with the forests, the minerals and the oil and gas that form our collective national endowment. We sometimes forget this important reality.  We lose sight of the vital resource supply chains that stretch across our country, binding our communities, our cities, and our people together. They are an important part of our national fabric.

There are many players in these resource supply lines, including manufacturers, high-tech firms, and service providers. Our resource sector not only fosters economic growth and helps to create good jobs, but also allows Canada to build a value chain that is green and low-emitting. A good example is Tenaris, which has reduced its electricity consumption per ton of product by 22% over the past 15 years. In 2009, it launched a C02 Emissions and Energy Saving Plan that was awarded a Climate Action certificate for its efforts.

Though our resource supply chains drive our economy, unfortunately they often do not drive the national conversation about our resource sector. Canada’s business community needs to ensure that Canadians can see not only how our resources move their world, but also how investment in the sector in one part of the country creates opportunities everywhere.
