Our Statement on the End of the Electric Vehicle Mandate
A more flexible, market-responsive strategy is critical for attracting investment, supporting jobs and incentivizing manufacturers operating in Canada.
Today’s announcement signals that the federal government is listening to industry on the need for policy that reflects market realities and supports business competitiveness. Advancing Canada’s trade diversification, investment, and decarbonization goals are essential. It must be done in a way that preserves Canada’s economic competitiveness and delivers realistic timelines, technology neutrality and regulatory certainty.
Businesses have been clear that rigid sales mandates and policy uncertainty risk slowing investment and undermining Canada’s position in the North American auto sector. A more flexible, market-responsive strategy is critical for attracting investment, supporting jobs and incentivizing manufacturers operating in Canada.
This more coherent direction helps restore confidence at a critical moment for investment, and we look forward to working with the federal government on next steps toward an auto strategy that secures a strong future for Canada’s automotive sector.
