Our Statement on Expected March 4 Tariffs

Businesses can't just switch their whole model to avoid tariffs and then go back again, depending on what politicians decide on any given day.

March 3, 2025

Businesses on both sides of the border have already been damaged by the uncertainty coming from President Trump’s drip-drip-drip of tariff threats. We have no reason to expect this will change any time soon. Whether it’s tomorrow, next week, or in April, there has already been damage to the relationship and to our economies.

Either way, we will have a long road back to Canada and the U.S. being trusted economic partners again. Businesses can’t just switch their whole model to avoid tariffs and then go back again, depending on what politicians decide on any given day.

The United States and Canada’s economic partnership is the envy of the world and brings massive benefits to families and workers in both countries. Every day without tariffs is $3.6 billion in economic wins. But every day with tariff threats makes us weaker as allies.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce believes in the value and promise of our continued trade alliance with the U.S. But when it comes down to it, we are going to stay squarely focused on what’s in Canada’s interest: protecting jobs, keeping our businesses competitive, and ensuring Canada’s long-term economic security.
