The unprecedented economic headwinds facing Canada have created a willingness to tackle longstanding challenges to improve our economic security and resilience. Bringing Canada’s medical system into the 21st century with an interoperable pan-Canadian health data system will not only benefit patients with better treatments and access to care, it will also make us more economically resilient by attracting investment into our world-leading life sciences industry and supporting a healthy and productive population.
Currently, however, Canada’s health information is fragmented across non-interoperable systems. The Pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy and the Interoperability Roadmap aim to address these issues by promoting interoperability and efficient data sharing.
But more progress is needed, and faster. Unlocking the power of health data is an easy, low-cost solution that will improve delivery of care and generate significant economic benefits. Ottawa, the provinces and territories have signaled a renewed spirit of collaboration to address challenges that cut across jurisdictions, creating a window of opportunity to advance meaningful progress.
We can already observe the benefits of interoperable health care technologies, supported by public-private collaboration, such as two-way information sharing between medical devices at Ontario hospitals. Now is the time to scale these innovations and ensure equitable access across the country.
This event will convene federal and provincial government leaders, healthcare industry experts, and patient representatives to explore how we can accelerate the shift to connected care in Canada. The discussions will focus on the significant economic benefits of a pan-Canadian health data system, fostering public-private collaboration, and advancing a unified vision for health data interoperability nationwide.
