Trans Mountain Pipeline

The Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project is in the national interest. Today, we are taking that message to Parliament Hill. Perrin Beatty, our President and CEO, will be joined by business, Indigenous and labour leaders from communities across Canada who have come together to show Parliamentarians they have the support they need to take the necessary steps to ensure this project gets built.

Our delegation includes provincial and territorial chamber presidents, association heads, corporate leaders, union representatives and Indigenous leaders, all united by a common message: the Trans Mountain project was approved following a rigorous, scientifically sound review process; it has the support of millions of Canadians and it is time for the government to take concrete action to ensure it gets built.

Our delegation is meeting with Minister of Finance Bill Morneau, Minister of Natural Resources Jim Carr, the Independent Senators Group and the Steel Caucus to talk about how this project will benefit communities and create jobs.

This $7.4-billion project will allow Canada to get one of its most valuable natural resources to international markets and allow Canadian companies to get a fair price for their product. The Trans Mountain Expansion will create thousands of jobs and generate billions of dollars in economic activity across Canada. The taxes and other revenues it generates will help to fund our roads, hospitals and schools.

The Conference Board of Canada has reported that the combined government revenue impact for construction and the first 20 years of expanded operations will be $46.7 billion, including federal and provincial taxes.

Here’s how the funds will be split:

  • British Columbia receives $5.7 billion
  • Alberta receives $19.4 billion
  • The rest of Canada shares $21.6 billion

If this project does not proceed, it will be economically disastrous for Canada and will send a terrible signal to investors at home and abroad. It is imperative for this project be built in order for Canada’s economy to gain a competitive edge and continue to prosper.
