St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce Honoured with Alto Award
On October 23rd 2017, the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce was honoured with the 2017 ALTO Award for Outstanding Sustainable Tourism for their St. Albert Farmers’ Market.
The Travel Alberta award specifically focuses on “maintaining environmental sustainability, and social and cultural integrity while contributing to the overall well-being of the local community.” Recognized as the largest outdoor Farmers’ Market in Western Canada, with over 250 booths, the Chamber has worked diligently to also be known as a leader in their field. The market created a partnership with the local food bank and market vendors where leftover produce was collected by market staff at the end of each day, resulting in over 5,000 lbs of fresh produce being donated this past summer.
The Market became an inclusive employer by creating a job for a developmentally challenged individual in the food court area. Special education days were created to help the vendors teach their customers the value of their product, the most successful being “Honey Day” which will now be an annual event. The market welcomes over 20,000 people each Saturday in the downtown core which also creates a huge economic impact to the businesses located in the area.
