After months of uncertainty, U.S. Congress has granted President Obama the authority he needs to conclude the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. As talks enter their final stage, Canadian businesses and farmers across the country released a statement calling on Canada to help bring them across the finish line.

Covering 40% of the global economy and almost 800 million people, the TPP is the biggest opportunity for trade liberalization in over 20 years. The agreement will give Canada unprecedented market access to Japan and other Asian countries, strengthen the North American economy and lay new foundations for trade growth throughout the Pacific.

“Canadians know that trade creates jobs, spurs innovation and gives families affordable choices in the marketplace. But for trade to flourish, countries need to agree on the rules of the game. That’s what TPP is all about. For Canada, the decision is clear: we either step up and shape the rules, or we sit on the sidelines while others write them for us,” said the Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
