Canada-U.S. flags

We are pleased by today’s announcement regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Canada and the United States on pre-inspection for truck cargo. This MOU is the first step in a pilot program that will allow U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials to pre-inspect U.S.-bound truck cargo at certain Canadian ports. The first phase will affect the Pacific Highway crossing between Surrey, B.C. and Blaine, Wash. The second phase of this pilot will be rolled out at the crossing between Fort Erie, Ont. and Buffalo, N.Y. We called for similar programs in our submission to the Beyond the Borders initiative.

The commitment to this pilot was made in the Beyond the Borders Action Plan announced last year by Canada and the U.S. We are pleased to see that, despite concerns caused by sequestration, both governments are moving forward with the promises they have made.
