Canada-U.S. flags

Earlier this year, in cooperation with partner organizations in Canada and the United States, we wrote to U.S. officials urging the administration to ensure proper staffing at U.S ports of entry.

The sequestration budget cuts scheduled for tomorrow, March 1, 2013, could mean significant cuts across all agencies in the U.S., including personnel at the Canada-U.S. border.

Businesses on both sides of the border would suffer from understaffing. Increased wait times would cost industry billions of dollars, in addition to the serious problems it could cause for individual travellers trying to move between the two countries. So much of our trade relies on the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across America’s border that a significant decrease in U.S. Customs and Border Protection staff could have a serious impact on the already-fragile economic growth in both of our countries. Neither Canada nor the U.S. can afford to let it happen.
